ORCNext: the next generation Organic Rankine Cycles

  
  

ORCNext is a research project aiming at coming up with innovative solutions to overcome existing show stoppers related to ORC (Organic Rankine Cycle) technology for waste heat recovery. The project, supported by IWT, joins the research efforts of Ghent University, University of Antwerp, Université de Liège, University College of West Flanders and Atlas Copco in cooperation with Power-Link, the energy knowledge platform of Ghent University, and SET, the valorisation consortium of the Association Ghent University in the field of sustainable energy technology.

Experts estimate the industrial waste heat currently being simply cooled away to be enormous (in Europe alone in the order of tens of TWh). The ORC (technology, a low-temperature variant of the traditional steam cycle, allows to recover this waste heat and produce electricity from it. As such instead of cooling away the waste heat, recovering it can lead to a large reduction of CO2 emissions even on a yearly basis. Hence, ORC technology has a large economic potential and will help to realise the 20-20-20 targets of the European Union.

ORCNext creates a knowledge platform to support all current industrial efforts and initiatives by means of  scientific knowledge and expertise, focusing on the next generation of ORC systems. Via a multidisciplinary approach five challenges will be tackled: increasing the efficiency by means of supercritical systems; adequate control of the dynamic behaviour over fluctuating heat flows via model based predictive control; reduction of design time by extracting design methodologies; the existence of test infrastructure supported by the necessary expertise; and finally an integrated economic and financial analysis of the technological advances.

ORCNext is a strategic basic research project (SBO) granted by the IWT in July 2011. Starting on February 1st 2012, the research team will interact closely with a number of industrial partners, members of the so-called advisory committee, during the 4 years of the project period. The committee exists of important Flemish companies currently active in the value chain: ABC, Alenco, Arcelor Mittal, Atlas Copco, ATS, BEP Europe, CMI, CNUD-EFCO, COGEN Vlaanderen, DNV Belgium, E. Van Wingen, Electrawinds, Energik, Gebroeders Timmermans, Gemeentelijk Havenbedrijf Antwerpen, Havenbedrijf Gent, Laborelec, Proviron, Stork, VEA and Vyncke Energietechniek. Each of these companies are interested in putting innovative Flemish products on the market based on or using the research results of the ORCNext project.
